Lord's Wood & Alms Wood

The woodland around Hungerford splits nicely into two sections - Lord's Wood and Alms Wood - and they're worth half a day if you're staying at Lorne Hill Farm or Evelyns Garden Glamping nearby. You're walking through proper beech and oak, the kind of forest floor that's soft underfoot even in dry weather, with enough variation to keep things interesting without being technically demanding.

It's a solid choice for families with primary-school kids or anyone after a proper woodland walk that doesn't require navigation skills or special fitness. The trees are tall enough that you feel properly enclosed, which some people love and others find a bit oppressive depending on the light. I found it most atmospheric in late autumn when the canopy thins out.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water and don't assume there's anywhere to buy a coffee halfway round. Access is straightforward from Hungerford itself. The walk doesn't have the dramatic views you'd get at some South East forests, but that's partly the point - it's intimate rather than showy.

Allow two to three hours for a decent loop without rushing. Combine it with a proper explore of Hungerford town itself, which has genuine character and decent pubs. It's the kind of walk that works well either side of a park stay rather than as the main event, though if you're woodland enthusiasts it absolutely merits the detour.
