Welford Park

The Kennet River winds through this nature reserve on the edge of Hungerford like it's got nowhere particular to be, and that's rather the point. Welford Park is one of those low-key Berkshire stretches where you'll actually see wildlife instead of just hoping to - herons, kingfishers if you're patient enough, and in spring the whole place comes alive with migrating birds.

It's a proper walker's spot, nothing flashy. The paths run alongside water meadows and through woodland, giving you that sense of moving through something genuinely wild, even though you're only minutes from town. Most people allow an hour or two depending on the route, though you could stretch it to half a day if you're the sort who stops frequently to watch things.

Families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will appreciate this more than toddlers - it rewards patience and quiet observation rather than offering playground facilities. Birdwatchers and photographers often set up here; the light on the water in late afternoon is particularly good.

If you're based at Lorne Hill Farm or Rhodeside, both just a few miles away, this makes an excellent morning or evening outing without the drive. It's free to wander, though the reserve operates on honesty - donations welcome. Go early if you want to see anything moving about. The main appeal is honesty rather than spectacle, which frankly is refreshing.
