Bunkers Hill

Sharp granite outcrops and sweeping moorland views make this Mourne peak well worth the scramble. From Newcastle, the ascent takes about two hours through Tollymore Forest Park, following well-marked trails that gradually steepen as you leave the trees behind. The final approach involves a bit of proper rock hopping - nothing too technical, but you'll want decent boots and a head for heights.

Families with older children will manage fine, though toddlers might struggle with the rocky sections near the summit. The reward is a cracking 360-degree panorama taking in Slieve Donard to the east and the Irish Sea stretching towards the Isle of Man on clear days. On a good morning, you can pick out individual streets in Newcastle far below.

Walkers tackling the Mourne Way often use Bunkers Hill as a warm-up before the bigger peaks, and it makes perfect sense as a half-day outing from any of the nearby parks. Tollymore Campsite sits practically at the trailhead, while Windsor Holiday Park offers a slightly more comfortable base just a few miles south. Allow four to five hours for the round trip, and check the weather - the exposed summit can turn nasty quickly when the mist rolls in from the coast.
