Tollymore Entry

The visitor centre at Tollymore sits right where the Mourne Mountains start getting serious. You're essentially at the gateway to some of Northern Ireland's best walking terrain, and this place does what it's supposed to do - gets you oriented before you head into the forest.

Inside, it's straightforward stuff: information about the landscape, the walking routes, what wildlife you might spot if you're lucky. There's a café too, which matters when you're planning a proper day out. The real draw isn't the exhibits though - it's the location. Step outside and you've got immediate access to forest trails ranging from gentle riverside walks to serious hill climbs toward the Mournes themselves.

Families with younger kids will spend an hour here max, then want to get on the paths. Serious walkers barely need to stop, unless they want coffee and a map check. It's useful rather than gripping, if you're honest. But if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby campsites - Camping Tollymore Forest Park is practically on the doorstep - you'll pass through regularly enough that it becomes useful background.

Newcastle is just a few minutes away if you need proper shops or a decent lunch. The entry fees and opening times aren't entirely clear from here, so ring ahead. Allow 30-45 minutes if you're not walking after, longer if you want to plan your routes properly. Worth a quick visit when you first arrive at the Mournes, but don't expect it to be the highlight of your trip.
