Bur-Marigold Pond

Water levels here shift dramatically with the seasons, making Bur-Marigold Pond something of a natural lottery. In wet months it's a proper pond, complete with wildlife and reflections of the surrounding countryside. Come during a dry spell and you might find little more than a muddy depression with disappointed ducks.

The pond sits in open North Yorkshire countryside, not far from the coast between Filey and Scarborough. It's the sort of place you stumble across rather than actively seek out - which is probably for the best, given its unpredictable nature.

Birdwatchers might get lucky during migration periods, though don't expect anything too exotic. Families with young children could make a brief stop if they're passing, but there's not enough here to warrant a special journey. The walking is easy enough, though muddy boots are practically guaranteed.

Being completely natural and undeveloped, there are no facilities whatsoever. Allow twenty minutes to half an hour at most, unless you're particularly keen on pond life or need somewhere quiet to sit and think.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks along this stretch of coast - Haven Blue Dolphin or Primrose Valley are both within easy reach - it makes a decent excuse for a countryside walk between beach visits. Just don't build your day around it.
