Burn Howe Duck Pond

The water at Burn Howe is proper still on a quiet morning - you'll find the duck pond tucked away near Whitby, easy to miss if you're not looking for it. It's the sort of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident, which is half its charm.

There's not much to it, to be honest. A modest pond with waterfowl doing their thing, a bit of rough ground around the edges, maybe a spot to stand and watch for a few minutes. No café, no visitor centre, no entrance fee that I can find. Just the water and the Yorkshire air. You'll want to bring bread if you're the type - ducks appreciate that, though proper birdseed is kinder to their stomachs.

Walkers heading out from Whitby will find this a reasonable short detour, nothing that demands a morning of your time but decent enough if you're already in the area. Kids might enjoy it for ten minutes, spotting ducks and throwing stones - though admittedly the novelty wears off quickly. History buffs won't find much, and it's not a destination in itself.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Northcliffe or Seaview, it's close enough for a morning constitutional. Pair it with a proper walk around the coast or into Whitby itself if you want actual substance. Worth a wander if you're passing, but don't rearrange your itinerary for it.
