Bus Depot

Stanley's Bus Depot is one of those places that shouldn't work as well as it does. It's a working museum dedicated to buses - yes, actual buses - and somehow it's genuinely compelling. You're walking around a collection of vehicles spanning decades, from the sort of double-deckers your grandparents caught to more modern coaches, all meticulously restored and displayed in what used to be a proper operational depot.

The appeal lies in the detail work. These aren't just parked up; many are furnished as they would have been, and staff know their stuff about local transport history. If you're into industrial heritage or automotive restoration, you'll find yourself staying longer than expected. Kids tend to have a good time climbing aboard and imagining journeys - though after an hour or so they might be ready to move on unless they're genuinely obsessed with vehicles.

It's free entry, which makes it worth a stop if you're staying at one of the glamping sites nearby - Beamish Glamping is barely a mile away. The museum works well as a half-morning visit before heading over to Beamish itself (the much larger open-air museum) or combining it with other industrial heritage spots in the area. Practically speaking, opening hours and admission policies can shift, so check ahead before making the drive out from Stanley. The location isn't particularly scenic - this is proper industrial County Durham - but that's rather the point.
