Butterton Moor

Wet bracken squelches underfoot as you climb towards this rather modest moorland summit, located just southeast of Stoke-on-Trent. The views from the top stretch across the Staffordshire Moorlands, though on a murky day you'll be lucky to see much beyond the immediate sheep-dotted landscape. It's proper wild up here - no tea shop or car park within miles.

Walkers seeking solitude will appreciate the peace, but families might find it a bit bleak for an afternoon out. The terrain can be boggy in places, and there's precious little shelter if the weather turns nasty. Allow at least two hours for the round trip from the nearest parking spot, which isn't exactly convenient.

What makes this worthwhile is the sense of genuine remoteness you get so close to urban areas. The moor feels properly untamed, with grouse occasionally startling you from the heather. It's best tackled on a clear day when you can actually appreciate the panoramic views.
