Bwlch Mawr

The walk up Bwlch Mawr rewards you with views across the Menai Strait that make the climb proper worthwhile. From Caernarfon, it's a straightforward approach - you're looking at a solid two to three hours round trip depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. The peak itself sits at a decent height, giving you sight lines all the way to Snowdonia on clear days, with Anglesey sprawling out across the water.

It's an excellent walk for families who've got older kids comfortable on steep ground - nothing technical, just a fair old trek. The path is well-trodden and obvious, though it does get boggy in wet weather. Allow extra time if you're not used to uphill slogs. Solo walkers and photographers come here regularly; the light in late afternoon is particularly fine.

Free to access, obviously - it's a Welsh hillside. Go early if you're visiting on a weekend, as the car park situation near Caernarfon can get tight. Autumn and spring offer the best conditions; summer brings midges that'll drive you mad, and winter can be slippery without proper boots.

If you're camped at one of the sites close by - Aberafon or Gyrn Ddu are both just a couple of miles away - this makes a cracking half-day adventure. Pair it with time exploring Caernarfon itself, or combine it with walks in the wider area. It's not a mountain that'll take all day, but it's the sort of excursion that sends you back to your caravan properly satisfied.
