Byron's Pool LNR

The water's dark and still, fringed with willows that dip right down to the edge. Byron's Pool sits just outside Cambridge, a proper woodland swim spot that's been drawing visitors since the Romantic poet himself supposedly took a dip here - though frankly, the legend matters less than the actual place. It's a local nature reserve, free to wander, and offers genuine peace if you hit it right.

What you get is a short walk through managed woodland down to a swimming hole that feels genuinely wild despite being minutes from the city. The water's cold enough to wake you up properly, and there's a small beach area where locals sunbathe in summer. Come autumn, the reflections are outstanding - the trees turn gold and the whole thing looks like a painting. The path itself is easy, maybe fifteen minutes from the car park, though it can get muddy after rain.

This works best for swimmers and walkers rather than small children - there's no playground, no facilities, just nature and water. Spring and early summer bring wildflowers; winter's quieter but atmospheric. Allow an hour minimum if you're swimming, half that for a quick circuit.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Cambridge Camping Club is barely a mile away - this makes a cracking evening outing or lazy morning before heading into the city proper. It's the sort of place that reminds you why people romanticise the Cam valley, even if the reality is muddier than the poetry suggests.
