Cae-Teilo Wood

The woodland trails around Cae-Teilo Wood, just outside Hereford, offer a proper escape into the kind of quiet Herefordshire countryside that doesn't make it onto postcards but absolutely should. Ancient trees, open glades, and the sort of peace you genuinely struggle to find anywhere else these days.

It's woodland walking country, really. The terrain is straightforward enough for families with kids who can manage uneven ground, though it's not a manicured park trail - expect roots, mud in winter, and the occasional fallen branch across the path. History types will find plenty to think about; the wood sits within an area rich in mediaeval settlements and old field patterns if you know what to look for. Serious walkers use it as part of longer loops into the surrounding hills, but a two-hour meander through the trees is equally worthwhile.

There's no visitor centre or formal facilities that I'm aware of, and admission appears to be free - it's the sort of place you simply go to. Spring is glorious when the bluebells carpet the forest floor. Summer can feel hemmed in by the green; autumn is probably the sweet spot. If you're staying at any of the nearby campsites - Chapel House Farm, Kaya at Blackhill Farm, or Poston Mill are all within a few miles - you've got yourself a proper woodland afternoon without needing to drive anywhere. Don't expect dramatic vistas or Instagram moments. Come for the trees, the quiet, and the reminder that Herefordshire has more to offer than just cider and walking the Wye Valley.
