Twyn y gaer Hill Fort

Climbing up to Twyn y Gaer takes you straight back to Iron Age Britain. This hill fort sits just outside Hereford, commanding views across the landscape that would have made it a proper strategic stronghold around 2,000 years ago. What you get is a walk through ancient earthworks - ramparts and ditches still clearly visible, even after all this time.

It's a decent trek up, nothing too punishing, and the views across Herefordshire alone make the effort worthwhile. You'll spot the concentric defensive lines if you know what you're looking at, though the site won't give up its secrets if you're expecting information boards or reconstruction drawings. Bring a basic knowledge of Iron Age hill forts or pick up a leaflet from Hereford beforehand.

History enthusiasts and serious walkers will get the most from this one. It's not the sort of place to keep children entertained for long unless they're genuinely interested in archaeology - an hour max, realistically. Free to visit, and you can access it most of the year, though winter mud can make the approach slippery.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby glamping spots like Grove Farm or Goytree, it makes for a solid morning walk. Offas Dyke Retreat sits even closer and would work as a launch point. It's worth the detour if you're already exploring the area's Roman heritage and ancient sites, but don't travel to Hereford solely for this. Combine it with the city's cathedral and museums, and you've got a proper day.
