Calshot Climbing Wall

Twelve metres of artificial climbing wall rise from what was once an aircraft hangar at this purpose-built facility on the Solent shore. The wall itself is properly challenging - multiple routes graded from beginner scrambles to overhangs that'll test experienced climbers. Equipment hire is available on site, though bringing your own shoes is wise if you're planning regular visits.

Families with older children will get the most from this place. Kids need to be confident on their feet and happy with heights - there's nothing here for toddlers beyond watching from the sidelines. The staff know their stuff and run taster sessions for newcomers, though booking ahead is essential at weekends.

Open evenings make this a decent rainy day alternative if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Solent Breezes or Lepe Beach Campsite. Southampton is just down the road for grabbing lunch afterwards. Allow two hours minimum if you're new to climbing - longer if the bug bites and you want another go at that tricky overhang.

The location feels a bit industrial compared to outdoor climbing spots along the coast, but when the weather's grim and you need to burn off energy, it does the job well enough.
