Hill Head Harbour

Hill Head Harbour sits quietly between Southampton and Portsmouth, a working harbour that's refreshingly unpretentious compared to the yacht marinas further up the Solent. You won't find gift shops or cafés here - just a proper bit of maritime Hampshire where local anglers still launch their boats and the tide dictates the day's rhythm. The concrete slipway and modest jetties might not win any beauty contests, but there's something honest about watching boats come and go against the backdrop of the Isle of Wight. Kids will enjoy spotting crabs in the rockpools at low tide, though don't expect to spend more than an hour here unless you're genuinely interested in small-scale fishing operations. Best visited during high tide when there's actually water in the harbour - at low tide it's mostly mud and moored boats sitting rather forlornly on the bottom. The walk along the sea wall towards Titchfield Haven is pleasant enough, with views across to Cowes on a clear day. It's well worth combining with nearby Lepe Beach for a proper day out, especially if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Calshot or New Forest edges. Free to wander around, naturally.
