Southampton

Spitfires still echo across Calshot Airfield, where test pilots once pushed experimental aircraft to their limits. This stretch of Hampshire coastline between the Solent and Southampton Water feels like where aviation history meets seaside leisure - proper windswept and wonderfully unpretentious.

The Solent dominates everything here. Brownwich Beach and Meon Beach offer shingle shores that face the Isle of Wight, while Hill Head Harbour provides a lovely spot for watching yachts navigate the busy shipping lanes. It's not your typical bucket-and-spade territory, but that's rather the point.

Calshot Castle, Henry VIII's compact coastal fort, stands guard where the Solent meets Southampton Water. Just inland, Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve protects one of the south coast's most important wetlands - brilliant for spotting migrant birds and learning about coastal ecology at the visitor centre.

For something more active, Calshot Activity Centre delivers proper adventure. Indoor skiing might sound daft this close to the sea, but the slope at Calshot gets packed with families perfecting their technique before Alpine holidays. The climbing wall's another draw, especially when the Solent winds are up.

Stanley's Meadow and Chilling Copse provide peaceful inland walks, while Stubbington Recreation Ground offers green space away from the coast. The whole area feels refreshingly low-key compared to Portsmouth or Southampton proper.

Getting here couldn't be easier - the M27 runs just north, connecting you to Southampton in fifteen minutes or Portsmouth in twenty. It's a brilliant base for exploring both the New Forest to the west and Portsmouth's historic dockyards to the east. Holiday parks along this coast put you right in the middle of serious maritime history without the crowds you'll find elsewhere along the south coast.
