Cambusbeg East Plantation

The woodland around Cambusbeg East feels proper wild compared to the manicured parks you'd expect near Callander. It's a genuine forest walk rather than a tourist attraction with a visitor centre and gift shop - just trees, paths, and the kind of quiet you don't get in towns.

What you're doing here is straightforward: walking amongst mature conifers and mixed woodland that actually makes you feel like you've left civilisation behind. The plantation covers decent ground, so you can spend anywhere from 45 minutes pottering about on shorter routes to a couple of hours if you want to explore deeper into the forest. There's something satisfying about a walk where you're not following a rigid loop - you can double back whenever you fancy.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not dramatic scenery - no lochs, no mountains looming overhead - but if you're the type who finds a good forest walk more restorative than a view, you'll find it worthwhile. Families with young kids might lose them after an hour; it's more suited to people who actually enjoy being among trees rather than those chasing Instagram moments.

It costs nothing and there's no fixed opening times because it's essentially just woodland you can walk into. The nearby holiday parks - Keltie Bridge is genuinely excellent, about 20 minutes away - make this easy to visit without planning ahead. Go in autumn when the light filters through differently, or spring when things are greening up. Summer can feel a bit dense and buggy.
