Candlesby hill nature reserve

The walk up Candlesby Hill rewards you with proper views across the Lincolnshire marshes - flat land suddenly makes sense when you're standing on actual elevation. It's a modest reserve, nothing that'll consume your afternoon, but the nature here punches above its weight. You'll see lapwings and curlews if you time it right, and in spring the wildflowers along the path are genuinely worth the trip.

The hill itself is the draw. From the top you can see right across to the coast and inland to where Skegness sits a few miles off. On a clear day it's the sort of view that makes you understand why people bother living in this part of the world. The paths are well-maintained and it's accessible enough for families with reasonable fitness, though the initial push uphill is a bit steep for what it is.

Allow ninety minutes if you're taking photos and stopping to birdwatch. An hour if you're just after the views. It works brilliantly as a morning outing before heading into Skegness for lunch, or as part of a longer walk if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like The Nurseries or Parkdean Resorts Southview. The reserve is free to access and there's no specific opening hours nonsense - it's a proper countryside spot that doesn't require booking.

Walkers will get the most from it. Kids might find it a bit sparse unless they're keen on spotting birds. History types won't find much to chew on here - it's nature first, everything else second.
