Canterbury Baptist Church

A working Baptist chapel tucked away in Canterbury's quieter streets, away from the cathedral crowds. This is proper local worship space - the kind of place where you'll find genuine community rather than tour groups. The building itself is modest, Victorian red brick, nothing flashy, but that's rather the point. If you're into nonconformist church history or just want to see how ordinary Kentish people practised their faith away from the established church, it's worth a look.

You won't spend more than twenty minutes inside, maybe less if the doors are even open - and that's the first thing to check before you trek there. There's no admission charge that I'm aware of, though I'd ring ahead to confirm opening times, as these independent chapels keep irregular hours. It works best if you're already in Canterbury exploring the cathedral and medieval streets. Combine it with a wander through the old town rather than planning a special trip.

Families with older kids interested in religious architecture might appreciate it, but younger ones will find it brief. History buffs get more from it - it's a tangible reminder of Kent's dissenting Protestant traditions. If you're camping nearby at Canterbury Camping and Caravanning Club or staying at one of the glamping spots scattered around the area, it's an easy addition to a day exploring the city. Worth the detour if you're there anyway, but not worth the drive from out of the region on its own.
