Capel Uchaf

The approach to Capel Uchaf is half the experience - a narrow lane that winds through proper Welsh countryside, all stone walls and sheep, until you reach this tiny whitewashed chapel sitting quietly above Pwllheli. It's the sort of place that stops you in your tracks because it feels genuinely removed from the world, even though you're only a mile or so from Haven Hafan y Môr if you're camping nearby.

Inside, it's austere and intimate. Wooden pews, lime-washed walls, a pulpit that speaks to centuries of local worship. The chapel dates back centuries, and standing there you get a real sense of what faith meant to isolated communities in Gwynedd - this was their gathering place, full stop. No visitor centre nonsense, no interpretive panels. Just the building and its quiet history.

This works best for people who actually like churches and aren't after a rush of activity. Walkers will love the approach and the surrounding landscape. Kids might fidget after ten minutes unless they're into old buildings. Allow half an hour at most, longer if you're the type to sit and absorb the atmosphere.

If you're staying at one of the local parks - Llwyn Ffynnon or Gimblet Rock are both close enough - it makes a brilliant half-morning detour. Park up, take the walk, then head back for lunch. It's the kind of place that reminds you why North Wales rewards the wanderers who venture off the main roads.
