Car Top isn't much to look at on the map - a modest peak near Dronfield that doesn't scream 'destination' - but that's precisely why it works. You get a proper walk without the crowds that plague the higher Derbyshire fells, and the views across the valley are genuinely decent for the effort involved.

The walk itself is straightforward. From Dronfield, you're looking at a gentle climb through moorland with decent path markers most of the way. On a clear day you can see right across towards the Dark Peak, and the gritstone outcrops at the top give you somewhere to stop and catch your breath. It's not dramatic or wild, but it's honest terrain - the kind of walk that makes sense if you've got a couple of hours free and the weather's cooperating.

Families with older kids will find this manageable. Younger ones might drag their feet unless you sweeten the deal with a packed lunch at the summit. Walkers who like their peaks steep and showy will probably find it a bit underwhelming, but if you're after solitude and don't need bragging rights, it delivers.

It's free, obviously. Allow two to three hours depending on your pace. If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Secret Wood Glamping is closest at under two miles, though Chatsworth Park and North Lees offer more conventional pitches - it makes a solid morning walk before heading into the Chatsworth estate proper or exploring Dronfield's local pubs.
