Carisbrooke Castle Museum

The medieval walls of Carisbrooke Castle rise up just outside Newport, and they're genuinely worth climbing if you're staying anywhere on this stretch of the Isle of Wight. What you get is a proper Norman fortress with actual history layered into it - the castle held out during the English Civil War, and later became a prison of sorts for King Charles I, which is the sort of thing that makes the place feel less like a museum and more like a time capsule with walls you can walk around.

Inside, the museum does a solid job explaining who lived here and why it mattered. There's armour, documents, and the kind of domestic detail that makes medieval life feel less abstract. The donkey wheel is still there too - a Victorian oddity that's become oddly iconic. History buffs will spend a good two hours here without feeling rushed; families with younger kids might find an hour enough, though the climb up the keep will appeal to anyone who likes views and stone staircases.

It's a short drive from Newport, which makes it easy to slot into a wider Isle of Wight trip. If you're camped at Windmill Campersite, you're practically on the doorstep. Parkdean Resorts at Thorness Bay or Sunnycott Caravan Park are also close enough for a morning visit. Best to go mid-week if you can - weekends draw the coach parties. Admission isn't free, but it's reasonable for what you're getting.
