Carnedd Y Ddelw

Two thousand feet above Llanfairfechan, this rocky summit delivers proper mountain views without the crowds that swarm Snowdon. The name translates to 'Cairn of the Image', though exactly what image ancient builders had in mind remains anyone's guess. What's certain is the 360-degree panorama from the top - Anglesey stretched out to the west, the Carneddau range rolling north, and on clear days, the Lake District peaks visible across the Irish Sea.

Experienced walkers will appreciate the challenging ascent through rough terrain and boggy patches. The most popular route starts from the Aber Valley, though proper boots and navigation skills are essential - this isn't a Sunday stroll. Allow four to five hours for the round trip, and check weather conditions before setting off. Mountain weather changes fast up here.

Families with young children should probably give this one a miss. The route demands fitness and sure footing, particularly in wet conditions. But for keen hikers staying at nearby parks like Three Streams Glamping or Cefn Cae Campsite, it's a rewarding day out that showcases North Wales at its wildest. The lack of facilities means bringing plenty of water and snacks - once you're up there, you're properly on your own.
