Pont y Teiryd

Stone circles don't get much more atmospheric than this Bronze Age monument perched on the hillside above Llanfairfechan. Pont y Teiryd translates roughly as 'bridge of the three lords', though what you'll find here are the weathered remains of an ancient burial chamber rather than any bridge. The capstone has long since collapsed, but the supporting stones still stand sentinel against the North Wales sky.

Climbing up from the coast road takes about twenty minutes through rough grassland - wear proper boots as it can get boggy after rain. Once you reach the site, the views across the Menai Strait to Anglesey are worth the muddy trek alone. History enthusiasts will appreciate the Bronze Age craftsmanship, while photographers love the dramatic backdrop of Snowdonia's peaks.

Kids might lose interest quickly unless they're already keen on ancient monuments. There's no interpretation board, so brush up on your Neolithic knowledge beforehand or bring a good guidebook.
