Carreg Samson

Three massive stones lean against each other like ancient giants playing a game that's lasted 5,000 years. Carreg Samson, a Neolithic dolmen perched on a hill just outside Fishguard, is one of Wales' most impressive portal tombs - and it's completely free to visit any time of day.

Climbing up to the monument takes about ten minutes along a well-marked footpath, though it's a bit of a slog with younger children. Once there, you'll find yourself face-to-face with a 16-foot capstone balanced on three uprights, creating a stone chamber that once held Bronze Age burials. The setting is properly dramatic too, with sweeping views across the Irish Sea.

History buffs will love pondering how our ancestors managed to haul these enormous stones into position without modern machinery. Kids might get restless after twenty minutes unless they're into scrambling around the surrounding rocks and playing hide-and-seek among the gorse bushes.

From any of the holiday parks around Fishguard - Prendergast Caravan Park is closest at under a mile away - this makes a cracking morning excursion before heading to the coast. Allow an hour including the walk, and bring a camera because the views on a clear day stretch all the way to Ireland. Just mind the sheep droppings on the path up.
