Garnwnda Burial Chamber

You won't find crowds at Garnwnda, and that's rather the point. This Neolithic burial chamber sits quietly in the Pembrokeshire countryside near Fishguard, a serious piece of Wales's prehistoric past that most holiday-makers walk straight past without noticing. The chamber itself is modest - a stone-built tomb dating back around 5,000 years - but standing among the rocks and moorland, you get a proper sense of why our ancestors chose this spot. It's the kind of place that appeals to walkers and history types far more than families after a quick photo opportunity.

The site is free to visit and accessible year-round, though there's no formal visitor infrastructure, so go expecting solitude rather than interpretation boards. Allow half an hour if you're making a dedicated trip, longer if you're combining it with a walk across the Preseli Hills - the landscape here demands proper exploring. Spring and early summer work best, when the Welsh countryside is lush and the light is decent for photography.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Fishguard Holiday Park and Tregroes Caravan Camping are both within walking distance - this makes an excellent morning excursion before heading into Fishguard itself. The burial chamber doesn't make sense as a standalone trip, but fitted into a broader Pembrokeshire itinerary focused on archaeology and wild walking, it's genuinely worth the detour. Real Wales, essentially, without the tourist infrastructure.
