Carreg yr Eryr

Sharp granite outcrops and sweeping views across Cardigan Bay make this lesser-known summit a proper reward for those willing to tackle the scramble. Carreg yr Eryr sits just inland from Porthmadog, offering a taste of Snowdonia's rugged character without the crowds that plague the bigger peaks.

The climb itself is more of an adventurous walk than a serious mountain expedition - though don't be fooled by its modest height. Rocky sections near the top require a bit of hands-on scrambling, making it unsuitable for very young children or anyone uncomfortable with exposure. Experienced walkers and teenagers will find it just challenging enough to feel accomplished.

From the summit, the coastline stretches out magnificently. Porthmadog's harbour sits below like a toy model, while on clear days you can spot the mountains of southern Snowdonia marching off to the north. It's a cracking viewpoint that feels genuinely wild despite being so close to civilization.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on how long you linger at the top. The ascent is free, naturally, and accessible year-round though winter conditions can make the rocky sections treacherous. For families staying at nearby Black Rock Sands or Haven Greenacres, it makes an excellent half-day adventure that leaves plenty of time for the beach afterwards.
