Graig Ddu

Standing at 244 metres above sea level, this modest peak offers surprisingly rewarding views across the Glaslyn Estuary and down towards Porthmadog. The climb up Graig Ddu isn't particularly challenging - most reasonably fit walkers will manage it in under an hour from the nearest parking spots along the lanes south of town. What makes it worthwhile is the panoramic sweep you get from the top, taking in Snowdonia's bigger peaks to the north and the coast stretching away towards Harlech. On a clear day, you can spot the distinctive outline of Portmeirion village tucked into the woodland below. Families with older children will find it manageable, though the final scramble to the summit involves some loose rock that might put off less confident walkers. The path isn't waymarked, so bringing an OS map is sensible. Early morning visits reward you with the best light and fewer crowds - not that you'll encounter many people up here anyway. This isn't Ben Nevis, but for a quick leg-stretch during a stay at one of the nearby holiday parks like Haven Greenacres or Black Rock Sands, it delivers proper mountain views without the serious commitment. Allow two hours return from Porthmadog if walking from town, or half that if you drive partway up the hill.
