Walking into Carters Grove feels like stepping behind a velvet curtain - suddenly you're in proper woodland, with the noise of Gloucester falling away completely. It's a forest that demands a decent pair of boots and a couple of hours minimum if you want to do it justice.

The trees here are substantial, the kind that make you crane your neck upwards without thinking. Paths wind through beech and oak, and in autumn the light gets that particular honey quality that makes every step feel photogenic. Walkers will absolutely get their money's worth from this. Families with older kids will find plenty of room to roam, though younger ones might struggle with muddy patches after rain. History buffs will appreciate that the forest has been managed for centuries, though you won't find interpretation boards spelling everything out.

Go in the morning while light filters properly through the canopy - afternoon can feel a bit samey in there.
