Carwinion Woods

A walk through Carwinion Woods near Helston feels like stepping back several centuries. These ancient woods have been here for ages, and you can sense that as soon as you enter - the canopy is thick, the ground proper mossy, and there's barely a car sound to be heard. The paths wind through dense woodland with streams running beneath, and if you time it right after rain, everything's dripping green and alive.

It's the kind of place that rewards a slow pace rather than rushing through. You're looking at perhaps an hour's walk if you're taking it easy, longer if you explore the quieter branches. Families with younger kids might find it manageable though some of the paths get muddy and uneven - wear proper boots. History buffs will appreciate the fact this is genuinely old woodland, the sort of place where the landscape hasn't changed drastically in centuries.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water and snacks. It's free to walk, which is brilliant. The woods do their job brilliantly as a recovery day between bigger attractions - head here after the beaches around Helston have worn you out, or use it as a grounding walk before moving on to Porthcurno or Mousehole.

If you're staying at Stay Wild nearby, this is genuinely on your doorstep and worth a morning ramble before breakfast or a late afternoon potter. The light filtering through the trees in early evening is rather special.
