Castell Eglwyswrw

The ruins sprawl across a windswept hillside near Cardigan, and you'll need to hunt a bit to find them - that's part of the appeal, really. Castell Eglwyswrw is what's left of a medieval fortification, probably built by the Welsh in the 12th century, though it's seen enough history that nobody's entirely sure. The earthworks are the main event here: a sequence of ditches and banks that once held stone walls, now weathered into gentle undulations across rough grassland.

Walkers will get far more from this than families with restless children. There's no visitor centre, no tea room, no interpretation boards. You're essentially poking around lumps in a field, which sounds less appealing than it actually is. The setting matters - views stretch across the Teifi Valley towards Cardigan, and on a clear day it's genuinely worth the short detour off the main road. Allow an hour if you're serious about it, less if you're just passing through.
