Foel Hendre

Clouds lifted just as I reached the top, revealing why locals have been tramping up this modest Pembrokeshire peak for generations. Foel Hendre stands at 410 metres - not exactly towering, but high enough to command proper views across the Teifi estuary towards Cardigan and the patchwork fields rolling down to Cardigan Bay.

The walk up takes about 45 minutes from the nearest parking spot, following sheep tracks through bracken and gorse. It's steep in places but nothing that'll trouble reasonably fit families with older children. Weather makes or breaks this one - on a clear day you'll spot the Preseli Hills to the southeast, but when the mist rolls in from the Atlantic, you might as well be climbing through cotton wool.

Walkers and peak-baggers will get the most from Foel Hendre, though it's hardly a challenging conquest. The real reward comes from having this slice of West Wales largely to yourself - I encountered more sheep than people during my visit. Early morning or late afternoon brings the best light for photography, when the coastal waters catch the sun.
