Castle Covert

Walk into Castle Covert and you're entering something genuinely different - a working woodland where history and nature have been left alone to do their thing. The forest sits just outside Bridgnorth, and it's the sort of place where you half expect to stumble across something ancient round the next bend, even if the castle itself is long gone.

What you're actually walking through is a proper managed woodland with paths that wind between mature trees and the lingering traces of medieval fortification. The appeal here depends entirely on what you're after. If you're the sort who gets excited by earthworks and overgrown ramparts, you'll find plenty to poke around. Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're the adventurous type - there's no playground or visitor centre, just trees and the occasional hint of what once stood here.

The real strength is if you're based at somewhere like Wheathill Touring Park just down the road, and you want a half-hour walk that's genuinely quiet. No entrance fee, no opening hours nonsense, just a woodland you can visit on your own terms. Allow an hour to do it properly without rushing, longer if you're the type to sit on fallen logs and listen to the wood settle around you.

Bridgnorth itself is worth your afternoon if you're in the area - proper riverside market town with actual shops - but Castle Covert works best as a quick escape between other plans rather than a destination in itself.
