Castle Hill Coppice

The woodland around Castle Hill Coppice offers a proper straightforward walk through mixed forest without any fuss or fanfare. You're looking at managed woodland on the edge of Shipston-on-Stour, the sort of place locals use on a Saturday morning rather than somewhere that'll stop you dead in your tracks. The paths are decent enough, winding through beech and oak with enough undergrowth to feel like actual forest rather than a manicured park.

It's ideal for a couple of hours if you're camping nearby - Aylesmore Farm is barely a mile away, and Crofts Barn even closer if you don't mind rougher pitches. The walk suits families with kids old enough not to need constant entertaining, or anyone after a leg-stretch between villages. Don't expect dramatic views or historical landmarks. What you get is quiet, reasonably flat ground and the sound of birds. Winter's actually better than summer when the canopy is dense enough to feel a bit oppressive.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. The whole thing works best as part of a larger day - combine it with a poke around Shipston-on-Stour itself, which has decent pubs and a proper high street. If you're after something more substantial, the Edge Hill estate and surrounding countryside has more to offer, but for a quick woodland reset between campsites, Castle Hill does the job without pretence.
