Castle Hill (Time Team)

You've probably seen Castle Hill on the telly - it's the Iron Age fort that Time Team excavated back in 1994, and the site hasn't lost its appeal since. Perched above Crewkerne in Somerset, this is a proper archaeological spot where you can walk the ramparts and actually feel the layers of history beneath your feet. The fort itself dates back around 2,500 years, and what makes it worth the visit is that you can see the defensive ditches and banks that the Iron Age inhabitants built to keep invaders at bay.

The experience here is more about atmosphere than finds - don't expect a visitor centre or gift shop. It's free to access, and you'll want a good hour to properly explore the earthworks and take in the views across the Somerset levels. Families with kids aged eight and up will enjoy the clambering about, though younger children might find it a bit samey after 20 minutes. History types and archaeology enthusiasts will get more out of it, especially if you've seen the Time Team episode beforehand.

If you're staying at Wytch Wood Camping or Esme's Escape just down the road, Castle Hill makes a solid morning excursion before returning for lunch. The walk up is moderate but manageable, and the site itself is open moorland so you're exposed to the elements - go on a clear day if you can. Not a destination that'll keep you occupied all afternoon, but as part of a broader Somerset ramble, it's genuinely worth the detour.
