Wayford Woods

Walking into Wayford Woods feels like stepping back in time. This nature reserve near Crewkerne is proper old-growth woodland - the sort of place where you half expect to bump into a forester from the 1800s. The trees are genuinely ancient, and that matters. You get a real sense of what Somerset's landscape looked like before we started clearing everything.

It's a straightforward walk through the reserve, nothing strenuous, and the paths are well maintained. Spring is absolutely brilliant if you can manage it - bluebells everywhere - but honestly, any season works. You're looking at maybe an hour, ninety minutes if you're the type to stop and listen to birdsong.

This is one for the naturalists and the quiet-walk brigade. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already into bug hunting and tree identification, but anyone who appreciates woodland for its own sake will get something out of it. The reserve isn't trying to be anything flashy - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just trees and peace.

If you're camped at Wytch Wood Camping just down the road, it makes a lovely morning or late afternoon detour before heading back for tea. The Dorset Hideaway and Esme's Escape are equally close by, so it slots well into a camping holiday where you want variety beyond the usual park activities.
