Castle of Pitsligo

The ruins of Pitsligo Castle sit on a low rise near Fraserburgh, and there's something rather affecting about finding it - a Z-plan tower house that's weathered five centuries without much fuss. What remains are the main keep and fragments of courtyard walls, enough to give you a proper sense of how it was laid out when the Hay family called it home.

You can walk right up to the castle for free and poke about at ground level. The tower itself is off-limits these days (safety reasons, understandably), but the exterior tells the story well enough - pepperpot turrets, sturdy stonework, the bones of a place that mattered. On a clear day you get decent views across Aberdeenshire farmland. It's the sort of spot where history feels genuine rather than staged.

This suits walkers more than anyone else. Families with young children might find twenty minutes enough to explore and move on - there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, just the castle and the sky. If you're into fortified houses and how they evolved, you'll find it genuinely interesting. Allow forty-five minutes if you're taking photographs.

Stay at Down On The Farm just 1.2 miles away and you're perfectly placed for a morning visit. The castle works best as part of a broader Aberdeenshire loop rather than a destination in itself. Fraserburgh's close by if you need coffee or supplies. Worth the detour if you're already in the area, but don't go out of your way specially.
