Hillhead, Chain Home Radar Station

You'll find the concrete footprint of Britain's early warning system scattered across a windswept hilltop outside Fraserburgh. Hillhead was a Chain Home radar station - one of the network that gave the RAF vital seconds to scramble during World War II. What remains now are crumbling bunkers, antenna foundations, and the kind of industrial archaeology that rewards those willing to poke around overgrown sites.

The station itself is skeletal - mostly concrete pads and underground passages. There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, so you're essentially exploring a ruin. That's either brilliant or disappointing depending on your view. Historians and military enthusiasts will find it genuinely compelling, especially given how few Chain Home stations survived intact. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming after twenty minutes of clambering over moss-covered foundations. Walkers, though, will appreciate the coastal approach and the moorland setting.

It's free to visit and you can access it year-round. Allow a solid hour if you're taking photos and reading up beforehand on what you're looking at - the bones of the place make far more sense with context. The exposed position means you'll catch wind and weather proper, so come dressed for it.
