Rosehearty, Chain Home Low Station

The concrete bunker sits on the cliffs near Fraserburgh like a relic someone forgot to tidy away - and that's precisely what makes it worth tracking down. This is a Chain Home Low radar station, one of a handful that survive from World War II, built to detect low-flying enemy aircraft approaching the Scottish coast. It's not much to look at from the outside: squat, functional, utterly devoid of romance. But that's the point.

You can walk right up to it and peer through the gaps in the structure, imagining the operators hunched inside, watching their screens for Luftwaffe bombers. The setting amplifies the experience - windswept cliffs, the North Sea churning below, nothing but coastline and history stretching either way. Bring binoculars if you want to examine the mechanics, though there's not a great deal left to decode.

Historically minded visitors will find this genuinely interesting; families with young children might lose patience after twenty minutes. It's free to access and requires perhaps half an hour if you're thorough. The real draw is combining it with a walk along the Aberdeenshire coast - the clifftop path is cracking for a few miles either direction.
