Catsbury Wood

You'll find Catsbury Wood sitting quietly on the outskirts of Gloucester, the kind of place locals know about but rarely end up in guidebooks. It's a proper woodland walk through mixed deciduous forest - oaks, beeches, the usual suspects - with enough paths to keep you exploring for a couple of hours without feeling rushed.

The woodland floor is thick with leaf litter and moss, especially after rain, so wear decent boots. There are some gentle slopes but nothing that'll have you gasping for breath. It's the sort of walk that rewards wandering off the main track - you'll stumble across small clearings and the occasional interesting tree that's been there longer than most of us have been alive.

Families with younger kids will get a solid hour or so out of it before boredom sets in. Older children who actually like woods will find it absorbing. If you're into woodland birds or fungi, autumn and spring are your seasons. Summer can feel a bit dense and airless, truth be told.

There's no obvious visitor infrastructure - no car park we could find, no facilities - so this is very much a come-as-you-are situation. The nearest proper base would be Pelerine Caravan & Camping Site, only 3.9 miles away, which gives you quick access without the need to trek across the Cotswolds. It slots in nicely as a morning walk before heading into Gloucester proper for lunch.
