Cawdor Castle

The first thing that hits you about Cawdor is how lived-in it feels. This isn't some hollow tourist trap - it's a proper family home that happens to have been standing since the 14th century, with rooms that still smell of woodsmoke and old books. You walk through the courtyard and immediately sense you're somewhere genuine.

Inside, the tapestries and furniture tell stories without needing plaques on every wall. The gardens sprawl across the grounds with real character - not manicured to death, but clearly cared for. Kids tend to enjoy the grounds more than the castle itself, which means you can let them loose while you potter through the rooms at your own pace. The whole visit takes a good two to three hours if you're thorough.

It's worth noting this isn't free - there's an admission charge - but it's reasonable for what you get. The castle sits just outside Nairn, making it an easy stop if you're touring the Highlands. The Shakespeare connection (Macbeth and all that) means history buffs will find plenty to chew on, though the castle's real story - one of actual inhabitants and centuries of family life - is far more interesting than the theatrical associations.
