Cefn Hill

Standing at 349 metres, this modest Herefordshire peak offers sweeping views across the Wye Valley without the crowds you'll find on the bigger hills. The walk to the top takes about 45 minutes from the nearest car park, following well-marked footpaths through mixed woodland before emerging onto open grassland.

Walkers and families with older children will appreciate the manageable gradient - it's steep enough to feel like proper exercise but won't leave you gasping. On clear days, you can see across to the Black Mountains and down towards Hereford itself. The summit lacks any dramatic rocky outcrops or mountain drama, but what it offers instead is a proper sense of space and countryside calm.

Dog owners particularly love this spot, as there's plenty of room to let energetic pets run free once you reach the top. The hill sits just west of Hereford, making it an easy addition to a holiday based at one of the nearby camping spots like Chapel House Farm Campsite or By the Wye Glamping. Early morning visits are best - you'll often have the place to yourself before 10am.

It's not going to feature in any coffee table books about Britain's most spectacular peaks, but for a decent leg-stretch with rewarding views, Cefn Hill does the job nicely. Allow two hours for the round trip including time to enjoy the summit.
