Cefn Waun-lwyd

The walk up Cefn Waun-lwyd rewards you with proper views across the Powys valleys, though it's not the sort of peak that'll stop you in your tracks. From Llanwrtyd Wells, it's an accessible climb - steep enough to feel purposeful without being brutal. The summit itself is fairly bare moorland, moorland that stretches on in waves of brown and green depending on season. On a clear day you can see across to the Brecon Beacons, though I'd be honest: the view isn't dramatically different from halfway up.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the kind of route that works brilliantly if you're staying at Welsh Glamping or Riverside Caravan Park nearby and want to shake off the stiffness after a few hours of travel. The terrain is open and boggy in places, so proper boots matter. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

Timing-wise, spring or autumn work best - summer can get muggy on the exposed sections, and winter visibility drops sharply. Families with teenagers will manage it fine; younger kids might find the moorland repetitive. The real appeal is that it slots easily into a broader Powys walking holiday. Combine it with walks in the Irfon Valley or day trips further afield to the Beacons, and you've got a proper trip. On its own? It's a pleasant couple of hours, not essential.
