Livingstone's Seat

This rocky outcrop near Llanwrtyd Wells demands a proper trek to reach it, and that's rather the point. You're climbing up moorland with nothing but views and the occasional sheep for company, which is exactly what you come to Mid Wales for. The seat itself is a natural stone formation - not a carved throne, but rather a geological quirk that reportedly caught the eye of David Livingstone during his travels. Whether that's entirely accurate hardly matters once you're stood up there looking across the Irfon Valley.

It's a solid two-hour round trip from town, so pack a map and decent boots. The path isn't marked brilliantly, which adds to the adventure but means you'll want to know what you're doing. Walkers will absolutely get their money's worth here - the landscape is genuinely wild and unspoilt in a way that feels increasingly rare. Families with young kids might struggle with the climb and boggy bits; teenagers who like a challenge will be fine.

The real beauty is that there's nothing commercial about it. No visitor centre, no cafe, no entrance fee. Just you, the wind, and some proper countryside. If you're staying at Welsh Glamping just down the road or one of the caravan parks nearby, this makes for a cracking day out that costs nothing but effort. Go in decent weather - in mist, you lose the view entirely and it becomes less rewarding. The surrounding moorland is worth exploring too; Llanwrtyd Wells itself is a quirky little market town worth a look on the way back.
