Cefn-y-coed Wood

A proper woodland walk tucked inland from the Conwy Valley, Cefn-y-coed Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The forest sits just outside Llanrwst and offers a decent network of paths through mixed woodland - nothing too demanding, but enough to feel like you've actually been somewhere rather than just strolled around a car park.

The appeal here is straightforward: trees, streams, and enough cover to keep you dry if the Welsh drizzle arrives mid-walk. Family groups with primary-school-age kids will get a solid hour or so out of it before restlessness sets in. Serious walkers doing a longer loop through the surrounding hills might use it as a gentle warm-up or cool-down stretch. It's free to access and there's no gatekeeping nonsense - just turn up and walk.

Timing matters slightly. Spring brings the woodland floor alive with bluebells and primrose. Autumn is properly golden if you catch it right. Winter can be muddy, so decent boots help. Allow anything from forty minutes for a quick potter to two hours if you're taking it slowly and actually looking about.
