Chantry Hill

Standing at 197 metres above sea level, this grassy hilltop delivers proper South Downs views without the crowds that swarm Box Hill or Devil's Dyke. The climb from Pulborough isn't particularly taxing - maybe 45 minutes of steady walking through mixed woodland before you emerge onto the open summit.

Walkers will love the 360-degree panorama from the top, with the Weald stretching north and glimpses of the coast on clear days. It's part of the South Downs Way, so you'll encounter the occasional long-distance hiker, but it's generally quiet enough for a peaceful lunch stop. The hill sits within easy reach of several holiday parks, making it a solid day-walk option if you're staying at Washington Caravan & Camping Park or any of the sites around Pulborough.

Families with older children will manage the ascent fine, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections near the top. There's no visitor centre or facilities up here - just you, the elements, and those rolling downs views. Worth combining with a pub lunch in Pulborough afterwards, especially if the weather turns. The whole expedition takes about three hours, including the walk back down.
