The Clump

This dense woodland sits atop a hill just outside Pulborough, offering a proper ramble through ancient beech and oak trees. The name might sound a bit odd, but locals have called this circular copse 'The Clump' for centuries - and once you see it from the surrounding fields, you'll understand why.

Walkers will find decent paths winding through the trees, though they can get muddy after rain. The woodland feels surprisingly wild for somewhere so accessible, with plenty of birdsong and the occasional deer if you're quiet. Families with older children will enjoy the gentle climb to reach it, though toddlers might find the walk a bit much.

From the edges of the wood, you get lovely views across the South Downs - particularly striking in autumn when the leaves turn. It's free to explore and makes a good hour's diversion if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Washington or Fox Wood Campsite. The lack of facilities means bringing your own drinks, but that adds to the sense of getting away from it all.

Best tackled in decent weather when the paths aren't too slippery. Dog walkers love it here, and it's well worth combining with a visit to nearby Pulborough Brooks nature reserve if you're making a day of it.
