Chard Reservoir

The water sits perfectly still most mornings, reflecting the Somerset sky like polished glass. Chard Reservoir is the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss entirely - which is rather a shame, because it's a genuinely peaceful spot for a walk, especially if you've got restless legs after a few days on a holiday park.

It's a working water supply reservoir, so don't expect swimming or watersports, but the walking circuit around it is straightforward and takes about an hour at a leisurely pace. The path is mostly level and well-trodden, making it accessible for most ages and fitness levels. Birdwatchers absolutely get their money's worth here - you'll spot common grebes, cormorants, and if you're lucky, the occasional heron stalking the shallows. Bring binoculars and patience.

The real appeal is the simplicity of it. There's no café, no visitor centre, no entrance fee that I'm aware of. You just turn up, park near the water, and walk. It's the kind of place where you notice things - how the light changes on the water, why the reeds grow thicker on the north bank, whether that was actually a kingfisher.
