The water sits perfectly still most mornings, reflecting whatever sky Somerset's throwing at you that day. Chard Reservoir is a proper working water supply for the area, but what makes it worth the trip from Crewkerne is the Local Nature Reserve that wraps around it - a genuinely good spot for birdwatchers and anyone who fancies a quiet walk without the crowds you'd get at more famous reserves.

You'll get roughly two miles of paths around the perimeter depending on which route you take. The reservoir itself is the main draw - on a decent day you can spot dabchicks, grebes, and if you're lucky, the odd heron stalking the shallows. The paths are well-maintained and flat enough that it's not a slog, though it can get a bit muddy after rain. Bring binoculars if you're serious about the birds; a camera works just as well if you're not.

This isn't a destination that'll keep anyone entertained for hours, but as part of a broader Somerset walking circuit it slots in nicely.
