Charlwood

The woodland around Charlwood, just outside Trowbridge, offers proper walking territory if you're after something quieter than the honeypot spots. It's a decent patch of forest - nothing dramatic, but the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think instead of dodging tour groups.

You're looking at gentle woodland trails rather than any formal visitor facilities. Bring decent boots if there's been rain; the ground gets boggy in places. The trees create that lovely dappled light effect in summer, and autumn here is genuinely worth timing a visit for - the colours strip the place bare in the best way. Maybe two hours maximum for a thorough wander unless you're the sit-and-sketch type.

Families with younger kids might find an hour enough before restlessness kicks in - there's not a playground or café to break things up. But if you've got teenagers or proper walkers in the group, this works nicely as a leg-stretcher between other Wiltshire attractions. The forest sits well within reach of Yellowtail Camping if you're basing yourselves there for a longer stay.

It's the sort of place locals know and visitors miss, which is often the way with ancient woodlands. Free to access, no gates or nonsense. Trowbridge itself is fifteen minutes away if you need town facilities. Worth slotting in if you're exploring the area rather than making a special trip, but don't expect manicured paths or interpretation boards.
