Chasewater Country Park

The reservoir at Chasewater feels properly different from the usual English countryside attractions. It's a 220-acre site near Rugeley where you can walk, cycle, or just sit and watch the water without being hassled by entrance fees or opening hours nonsense. The paths loop around the water's edge, giving you decent views across to tree-lined shores, and there's enough space that you won't feel crammed in even on decent weekends.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The circuit takes around an hour and a half at a steady pace, and the terrain's flat enough that older kids and less experienced hikers won't struggle. There's a visitor centre with facilities, though it's worth checking what's actually staffed on the day you visit. Birdwatchers absolutely rate the place - it's a proper hotspot for waterfowl, especially in winter when the migratory species arrive.

If you're basing yourself at Cannock Chase Camping & Caravanning Club Site just down the road, Chasewater makes an ideal morning or afternoon break without eating up petrol money. The whole area around Rugeley has decent walking options, so you could easily string together a few spots across a week. It's not flashy or Instagram-ready, but that's rather the point. Sometimes you just want a walk by water without the fuss.
